Do you actually need a Korean number?

Short answer first: buying a tourist prepaid Korean number usually does not unlock most of these apps. The real question isn't “do I need a number” — it's “what kind of verification does what I want to do actually require.”

There are two different kinds of verification

SMS possession check

This one only proves you're holding the number right now. Any SMS-capable number works — including your home country's.

Korean phone identity verification

This one requires the number to be registered in your own name with a Korean carrier. Tourist prepaid numbers are usually registered under the carrier's or reseller's name, so they typically fail this check.

Community reports conflict: one traveller on a forum (milemoa) said a carrier-direct (not reseller) prepaid line did pass identity verification. Two others disagreed. This is unresolved.

What do you plan to do in Korea?

Select everything that applies.

Checking results with nothing selected shows “a data-only eSIM is enough” — because you haven't picked anything that triggers a gate.

If you buy through the links below, we earn a small commission. But this also happens to be the cheapest answer we can give you. If what you need to do — like food delivery, mobile pay or domestic ticketing — genuinely requires a Korean line in your own name, we earn nothing from that part.

When you genuinely need a Korean number

The items below aren't solved by a tourist prepaid number either. You'd need a Korean carrier line registered in your own name, tied to an alien registration card.

  • Baemin (배달의민족, food delivery)
  • Coupang Eats / Coupang
  • Naver Pay / Kakao Pay

Going somewhere other than Korea?

We ask the same question — whether a data-only eSIM is enough — country by country, on a separate site. Japan is up now.
